Pete Betcher

Pete has this thing with short bios, where he fears that he isn't going to mention the right details, and will alienate his audience. Mostly because the amount of space they give you is entirely too short to say ANYTHING about your self so he usually panics, stresses out, and finally decided to simply put the one thing that everyone should know about him. Which is that pete ha-

Half-Life 3 will soon be mine

All of this waiting for when Valve is ready is just silly, so I recently decided to take matters into my own hands. I have offered the company that Freeman built something that they can’t possibly refuse, that awesome lamp I made. Now, don’t ask how I did it (after all I wouldn’t want everyone flooding the market with them, and, thus, lowering the value of my offer would I?), just accept the fact that the process lands somewhere between making cookies, and alchemy.

I have approached Valve with an email, and I have to say, I like my chances. Click on to read the email in full.

Love. Pushmo.

Dear 3DS Owners,

Download Pushmo. Really. I know it seems weird hearing someone tell you to download something on ANY Nintendo console, and especially strange on the baby powder fresh 3DS, but I’m serious.

After you are done watching teams of Christmas ornaments swing into an empty square, tear through that wrapping paper, and enjoy the gem contained within.

The game has you pushing, pulling, and sliding block based shapes of a larger image through different planes in order to save a hopelessly trapped youngster. It’s super fun, and if you are bold enough (and also just plain cool enough), I whipped up a stage using the level editor available through that QR code.

Now let me be real with you, that level may look cute with all those shades of pink, but it does not eff around. Not one bit.

Sincerely, DaftBit

Mario Kart Deserves Better

Too often, reviewers (and their cohorts) hide behind the “reviews are opinions and can’t be wrong” defense. While this may be based on a true principle, let’s be honest, it holds water like a gym sock. Reviews are much more than opinions, and are expected to give readers (or viewers or listeners) exponentially more than “I didn’t like it.” When your paper on Lord of the Flies came home with a big red C+ on the top, did you pull the opinion card then, as well? How did that work out?
Reviews should be complete, insightful, accurate, and honest. Even if a reviewer doesn’t like a subject, they should be able to apply their (presumably larger than the reader’s) pool of knowledge to see the merits and shortcomings from the perspective of those potentially interested. If they cannot, perhaps they shouldn’t be clacking away at their keyboards about it. For example, I know diddly about marching band, so please don’t approach me with questions about those twirly baton things, and I’ll do my best not to write about them. Daft Bit’s critiCritic turns the table on the aforementioned reviewers, and subjects them to the same judgemental stare they are used to doling out. Whether that is to applaud, question, or scold is up to the reviewer.
I bring you, critiCritic: Jim Sterling’s Mario Kart.

GameDay: Is there a big name in consoles on its way out?

[UPDATE: This post was originally written on May 30, 2011. It's extremely timely, however, given the state of Nintendo. Here's what we thought about the company's situation two months ago. Were we right?]

Welcome to GameDay, DaftBit’s back and forth banter about the topics you need to hear about, by the people you need to hear it from — Pete Betcher and Jason Leavey. Do your homework (politely waiting for you below), put on some tunes, and try not to hate.

Today we cover the likelihood of a major shift in the console hardware race, either a disappearence of a current player, or the explosion onto the scene of a new gladiator looking for blood money.

GameDay: Christmas in Hyrule

Written by Pete Betcher on July 12th, 2011. Posted in GameDay

Pete Betcher: I know that I’m a little behind, but I finally finished up The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and put the mastersword through Ganon’s thick skull earlier this week. I know, the game has been out for weeks now, but you have to remember there is another whole dimension to fight through! That’s a 50 percent increase over the original’s dimensional output, which obviously adds another 20 or 30 hours to the affair. Regardless, the game was an absolute treat, and if you have a 3DS I would really suggest picking it up.

Why I’m here now, however, is another story. One night, with my Zelda filled brain squeezed lightly between noise cancelling HeshPhones, I started thinking how fun (and terrifying) owning a hookshot would be. Which led me to thinking about the real world application of all sorts of Zelda goodies, which now brings the question to you, Jason Leavey and Rhody Tobin.

Extra Extra! Should motion controls be sweating?
