Here’s what 1-million coins gets you in New Super Mario Bros. 2

Nintendo promised a special surprise after collecting 1-million coins throughout New Super Mario Bros. 2. Instead, players are rewarded with a new home screen wallpaper.

Sure, a wallpaper featuring a shiny golden statue of our mustached plumber protagonist upon a mountain of coins is a great accomplishment to show off to friends. But that’s it? Not even a special new level, or unlockable character? So disappointing. Hell, beating Mario Kart 64 also rewarded players with a new home screen wallpaper, but that hardly got promoted as a feature.

Why include the coin counter? Why get me to spend countless hours testing the limits of my carpal-tunnel? Let’s be honest, the game felt like it lacked originality in all aspects except the coin emphasis, and finding out that it was for nothing really infuriates me. I think it’s about time Nintendo really rethinks their in-game reward system. This bullshit just isn’t cutting it.
