Mario Kart will always have items, says creator

Last week at GDC, Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo had a chance to catch up with Hideki Konno, the director/producer of the popular Mario Kart franchise. Konno addressed a common question he gets from fans, asking if we’ll ever see a day where the game will feature item-less play.

I’m often asked, hey, in Mario Kart, could you please make a mode where there are no items. Let us race. But personally I think Mario Kart without items is not Mario Kart. Our goal, of course, is to keep the items in but just balance it well.

I never wanted a Mario Kart without items, but I did want the option to set which items were used for multiplayer, especially local. Konno also mentioned future editions of the game will look at improving fairness, especially in terms of level ruining items like the notorious blue shell.

I’m not trying to project or anything. I think in our next Mario Kart, we’ll be looking at the balance and I think we’ll come up with some answers and some solutions to make the game fresh and exciting as we move forward.

Hopefully that will happen with the upcoming 3DS version, which is slated for a 2011 launch.
